Nathaniel Smith Obituary

A King of hearts, a gentleman, a conqueror… God’s Miracle Man! Nathaniel Smith, affectionately known as Nate, slipped away from us and unexpectedly boarded the flight to his final destination on Sunday, January 19, 2020. On January 10, 1957, this phenomenal man was born to the union of Reaver and Randolph Smith in Detroit, Michigan. He was the youngest child of the Smith clan and was loved by all! Nate’s birth would bring physical challenges, however, he would defy the odds every time! He had the tenacity to withstand the many obstacles and hurdles that he had to face every day. You see Nate was born with a disability, but it never impeded his ability to live his life on a grand plateau. He graced each encounter with dignity and courage. He was a brave soul! He was a man, of peace, understanding, and valor. His intellectual capacity was beyond measure for he could speak wisdom into any situation. When the average person complained and sweated the small stuff, Nate reached out on faith and with the help of God became more than a conqueror. All that knew him can attest to the heart of a gentleman that reached the highest heights. During the early years, Nate was educated in the Detroit school system. He would later relocate to Trenton, NJ and graduate from Trenton Central High School. Like a champ, he continued his education and trained to become a data processor for the State of NJ. Eventually, he would undergo yet another major life challenge which resulted in the loss of his eyesight. During the period of adjusting to this unforeseen plight, he persevered and stated, “I guess there is something that God doesn’t want me to see.” With that belief and understanding, he journeyed into the next phase of his life as a blind man confined to a wheelchair. The determination within was so strong that he ultimately learned to operate, and fearlessly navigate, an electronic wheelchair and a desktop computer. He lived independently and worked for the past 15 years as an office clerk at Project Freedom in Lawrenceville, NJ. Nate has been publicly recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to his community on multiple occasions. Nate was preceded in death by his parents, Reaver and Randolph Smith, his oldest sister, Annie R. Smith, his oldest brother Randolph Smith, Jr., and several other beloved relatives. He leaves to mourn his passing, his dear friend Essie McNair, his sisters, Hattie R. Taylor, Eva J. Smith, Wanda J. Smith, a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins. His presence among us will be forever remembered and cherished. Nate fought the good fight of faith...the beauty of his existence leaves a legend to be reckoned with… God’s Miracle Man!
