THE FUNERAL MASS TAKING PLACE IN TIMBER LAKE, SD WILL CONTINUE AS SCHEDULED. ****** JAMES HERMAN HULM was born on July 1, 1933 to Anton and Cecilia (Wolf) Hulm on the family farm southwest of Timber Lake, South Dakota. He grew up there and attended rural country school. In 1951, he graduated from Timber Lake High School. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in March of 1952 during the Korean War. He served until March of 1956, when he was honorably discharged. Jim was united in marriage to Alice Beer on June 15, 1957. The couple made their home in Sturgis, South Dakota for one year before returning to the family farm near Timber Lake, where they farmed for over 35 years. To this union of 50 years, five children were born. Jim was a member of the American Legion Post #84 for over 50 years and served as the group’s treasurer for many of those years. He was a member of the Timber Lake and Pipestone Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight in Timber Lake. He was also a member of the Holy Cross Choir for many years. In July of 1969, Jim was elected to the Timber Lake school board and served for 23 years, 12 of which he was the chairman of the board. During his time on the school board, Jim was instrumental in helping to start the Northwest Area Multi District Coop and served several years as the chairman of the Coop. In 1983, he was appointed to the Associate School Board and served eight years there, as well as being chairman. Jim was a member of the Northwest Multi-District Coop until he decided to no longer run for the local school board in 1992. In 1983, Jim was selected as the State Outstanding School Board Member of South Dakota. Alice preceded Jim in death in April of 2007. Three years after her death, Jim was united in marriage to Donna Baatz of Jasper, Minnesota. The couple was married for nine years and Jim continued to reside near Jasper until his death on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at the age of 86 years, 6 months, and 13 days. Jim’s favorite hobby was spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, easily made friends, and loved to tell a good joke. Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Donna of Jasper, MN; three daughters, Cindy (Tony) Koenders of Pipestone, MN, Deb Hagedorn of Cedar Rapids, IA, Jennifer (Del) Kooiman of Pipestone; two sons, Jim (Ellen) Hulm of Timber Lake, SD and Fred (Michele) Hulm of Faith, SD; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; he is also survived by his stepchildren, Julie O’Hara of Midland, MI, Mike (Carol) Baatz of Pipestone, Jeff (Lisa) Baatz of Trosky, MN, Mark Baatz of Jasper, Bill (Lynda) Rave of Brookings, SD, and Shari (Scott) Enger, of Pipestone; 15 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Majorowicz of Austin, TX and Theresa (Jack) Hazel of Mobridge, SD; one brother, Herman (Loretta) Hulm of Mobridge, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; his parents; and one brother, Victor Hulm.
