Linda Burrell Obituary

Linda Meara Burrell, 70, of Hague lost a valiant battle with ALS disease on Thursday, January 2, 2020. She passed away peacefully at home. Linda was the daughter of the late Milan R. Cillo and the late Virginia Williams Cillo and the stepdaughter of Lucy Cillo of Vernon Hills, Illinois. She was the beloved wife of Jon C. Burrell of Hague. Linda was born in Chicago, Illinois where she worked as the Home Furnishings Fashion Director for Carson Pirie Scott and traveled the world in search of special home furnishings that had to pass her very critical eye. She spent much of her adult life in Maryland where she was an elected official of the town commission in St. Michael's and in Annapolis, Md where she served for 18 years as the Membership Services Director for the Maryland Municipal League. While at the MML, she was honored by the governor of Maryland for creating and editing a book about municipal government in Maryland. She was also honored by the University of Maryland for her role in guiding the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance, which taught the art of governance to local government officials. In 2010 she and Jon retired to their home near the Potomac River in Hague. In addition to her husband and stepmother, Linda is survived by her loving sons: Colin Meara (Allison) of Charleston, SC; Travis Burrell (Rebecca) of Hanover, MD; and Darren Burrell (Cara) of Pottstown, PA. Linda leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Ava, James, Caleb, Graham and Aidan. She is also survived by her devoted sisters: Robyn Metallo (Robert) of Coles Point, VA; Dawn Cillo (LeRoy Fanslow) of Port Barrington, IL; Susan Cargill (John) of Hanover Park, Il; and JoAnn Aiello (Rick) of Buffalo Grove, Il. She is also survived by her furry buddy Gus, the wonder dog and goodwill ambassador, who brought much joy to her life.....including "Wine Time" that he reminded her occurred every day at 4pm. Linda was a kind and creative soul. She loved beachcombing and some of her best beach finds were made into exquisite sea glass jewelry which she marketed as "RivahLyn Jewelry". Each piece was individually crafted and named. Her artistic skills were duly noted when she was juried into the prestigious North American Sea Glass Festival in Lewes, Delaware. She was further noted by the local press as a featured artist of the month. She had a passion for collecting snowman ornaments and the last count exceeded 400. She asked that her collection be donated to a children's hospital. Above all, Linda loved her family and the life that she and Jon created in their Northern Neck home. A celebration of Linda’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 18, 2020 at the Welch Funeral Home Marks Chapel in Warsaw, Virginia. Please come prepared to share memories of Linda and spend time with her family honoring a life well-lived. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Welch Funeral Home, Marks Chapel. A reception following the service will be held at 4:00 p.m. at General's Ridge Vineyard, 1618 Weldons Drive, Hague, VA 22469. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you honor Linda’s courage in battling ALS by making a donation in her honor to the ALS Association, 1275 K Street NW, Suite 250, Washington, DC 20005.
