James L. "Jim" Rossie, 73, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, December 30, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. His family will greet friends Saturday, January 4th, 2020, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. The family will then host a gathering at the Iowa City Eagle's Lodge from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the James Rossie Memorial Fund. Born January 29, 1946 in Iowa City, the son of Leo Rossie and Navada Cahow, Jim grew up in Iowa City and graduated from Iowa City High School. He married Joyce Gardner on October 15, 1973 at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Jim worked hard, supporting his family, working Electrical Highlines for L.E. Meyers, Heavy Equipment Operator for Iowa Road Builders & L.L. Pelling retiring in 2010. Jim’s family was everything to him; he was always there whenever you needed him. As a young man he and his father traveled throughout the Midwest competing in many trap shooting competitions, winning many state titles. Later in life he again started trap shooting and it was fun to listen to the old timers say “Welcome back Jimmy” He also shot skeet, and mastered that quickly. To Jim there was never a stranger, his friends were far and wide. He enjoyed teaching his wife, children, grandchildren and nephews outdoor sports, including archery, bowhunting, target shooting, fishing, hunting and any outdoor activities. With his family he also enjoyed participating in 3-D archery shoots winning several. He enjoyed Duck Hunting, Deer Hunting, Dove Hunting, and Fishing up and down the Mississippi River in the winter, and catfishing in the summer. After retiring he & Joyce enjoyed spending time each summer in Bena, MN with his buddy Al Breese fishing on Bow String, Six Mile, Lake Winnie and Red Lake. Jim & Al spent their lives trying to outdo each other pulling pranks on each other. Jim was a great cook and made the best pizza ever. Survivors include his wife Joyce; son Brian Rossie (Ann Vandenberg) of North Liberty; daughter, Michelle Rummelhart (Scott) of Hills; and grandchildren, Allison & Anthony Rummelhart, and Ginger his constant companion. Others include, sister, Margaret Shaffer of Austin, Texas, her children Paula (John) Stephens, of Allen, Texas and Angie (Ricky Hayes) Shaffer, of Austin, Texas. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Rossie, and Navada Cahow, Grandmother Bessie Hagist, and the best field trialing duck dog on Lake Odessa, Federal.
