Avery Alden Phelps, 84, of Plymouth died Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at his residence in Plymouth. Born September 19, 1931 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Bailey Fredrick Phelps and Clara Phelps and was preceded in death by his son, Ronald Alden Phelps; sister, Audrey Phelps Lassiter; brothers, Arley P. Phelps, Bailey C. Phelps, Lindsey W. Phelps and Gerald Phelps. Avery was a retired supervisor with Weyerhaeuser Corporation and member of Zion's Chapel Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, member of American Legion Post 391 and member of Welch Creek Hunting Club. His family includes his wife, Faye Mobley Phelps of Plymouth, N.C.; sons, Cleveland Linton of New Bern, N.C. and Kenneth Linton of Chocowinity, N.C.; brothers, S.D. Phelps of Plymouth, N.C. and Eli Derl Spruill of Columbia, N.C.; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Zion's Chapel Church of Christ, Roper with Mark Wilmoth officiating. Family will receive friends at the church on Saturday following the service and other times at the residence.
