Peter Clarke Church

On August 8, 2025, our hearts broke as we said goodbye to Peter Clarke Church, who passed away at the age of 66

Peter was born in Montreal in 1959 to Donald and Margery Church. At the age of 14, he relocated with his family to Peterborough, where he lived the rest of his life. He attended Kenner CVI, where he met his lifelong best friend, Terry Freeburn — a friendship that spanned decades and enriched every part of his life.

Peter found his life partner and best friend in Rose Church. Together, they built a family, shared countless adventures, and created a lifetime of memories. He was a loving father to Travis Mackenzie (Julie Hiltz), Donald Church, Lisa Bodnaryk (Ian), and Ashley-Anne Church.

His greatest joy came from his role as “Poppa.” He cherished time with his grandchildren — Shelby Mackenzie, Samantha Church, Logan Hiltz (Sarah), Wyatt Church, Kaleb Hiltz, Jordan Hiltz, Jazzmin Mackenzie, Steph Bodnaryk, Tyler Bodnaryk, Avery-Kole Church and Kyleigh-Anne Reid — and was blessed to watch his great-grandchildren Arianna, Ella, and Olivia grow. He will be deeply missed by his sister Elaine Church, who was very important to him and whom he always tried to protect, as well as his many nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

An avid outdoorsman, Peter had a lifelong passion for raising Beagles and attending field trials — a pastime he shared with his family and through which he formed countless lasting friendships. He owned and operated two businesses over the years, including a roofing company and a dump trailer service, and skillfully renovated numerous rental units and homes. Even after health challenges left him in a wheelchair, Peter continued to amaze those around him with his determination, skill, and perfectionism, truly embodying the spirit of a “jack of all trades.”

Peter loved hunting, fishing, camping, and everything the great outdoors had to offer. His first trip to Nova Scotia sparked a love for the East Coast, a passion he happily shared with his family.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, his love of nature, and the joy he found in spending time with family and friends. Peter’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Peter was our rock, our laughter, and our safe place. We will love him forever and carry him in our hearts always.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to attend may contact Rose Church at [email protected] for details. The gathering will be an opportunity to share stories, memories, and celebrate Peter’s remarkable life.
