Jerry Wayne Ballenger, 76, of Leonard, Michigan, passed away on July 4th, 2025. He was predeceased by his loving parents Daniel and Kathryn Ballenger.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry, a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather, loving brother, uncle, loyal friend, and passionate businessman. He left this world surrounded by his 7 children and loving wife Susan of 24 years, leaving behind a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering determination.

Born with an unshakable drive and a spirit that never backed down from a challenge, Jerry lived his life with fierce purpose. A self-made man in every sense of the word, he built his businesses from the ground up with grit, passion, and a refusal to accept failure as an option. His entrepreneurial spirit inspired everyone who knew him, and his success was measured not only by his accomplishments, but by the countless lives he impacted along the way. Jerry was an innovator and leader in the print media world for more than 45 years.

Proud father of 7 children: Jessica Midraj (Sadiq), Daniel Ballenger (Kristin), Sara Ballenger, Jacob Ballenger (Katie), Elizabeth Lane (Zack), Cooper Ballenger and Shane Ballenger. He guided each of them with love, humor, and wisdom…from teaching them how to throw a softball or football, shake a man’s hand with confidence, to reminding them, “Your life is yours to shape.” He was their biggest cheerleader and protector. Jerry spent countless hours coaching, volunteering on the Romeo School Board back in the day and building lasting relationships in his children’s communities, Romeo and Oxford. He modeled what it meant to lead with character, and how to build a blended family rooted in love and unity.

His heart overflowed with pride and joy for his 12 grandchildren: Sara, Nawal, Collin, Luke, Asher, Chloe, Rhys, Audrey, Wesley, Evan, Caleb, and Ava. Whether he was teaching them to snow ski, pulling them on a tube on the lake or simply sitting beside them enjoying their laughter, he was always fully present. He found deep purpose in being their “Grandpa,” a role he a cherished with every fiber of his being.

He was a loving brother to Carolyn, Donna, and Debi and had countless beautiful memories with them.

To know Jerry was to be drawn in by his magnetic personality. He had a natural charisma that lit up every room. People didn’t just like him, they loved him. He could command a space with his voice, humor, and presence, yet always made others feel seen and valued. There was always wisdom in his words and always had something profound to say. His warmth and charm were matched by his integrity and gentleness.

Jerry also had a soft spot for animals, nurtured by his wife Susan’s love for all living creatures. He lovingly cared for their dog, Quest, and two cats, Mia and Billy, even the strays that Susan cared for. He tended to them daily as part of the rhythm of his kind and generous life.

One of Jerry’s greatest joys was spending time at his happy place, Houghton Lake. Whether boating, relaxing by the water, having a beer with the neighbors who meant the world to him, or hosting weekends filled with laughter, food, and grandkids, the lake was his sanctuary. He also had a serious sweet tooth to match his sweet soul and never passed up a dessert, and lemon meringue was his favorite. Yet, his favorite place in the world was beside Susan, curled up in bed, watching TV together at the end of the day. Those quiet, relaxing moments were when his heart felt most at peace.

He also loved cruising with Susan, Cooper and Shane, with the open sea before him and new family memories waiting to be made.

Jerry leaves behind not only a loving family but also countless friends, wonderful neighbors, life long colleagues, and many admirers. His legacy is one of resilience, loyalty, laughter, and love. While our hearts are heavy in his absence, we find comfort in the countless memories he gave us and the extraordinary life he lived. He truly had it all.

He was, most definitely, one of a kind. Though he may be gone from our sight, his love and spirit remain woven into the very fabric of our lives. As Jerry would said, “Every person you meet leaves a mark, take a little piece of their soul and keep it close, put it in your pocket.” For all who knew him, we now carry a little piece of his soul with us, in our pockets, forever.

Jerry showed us all how to live boldly and love deeply. He will be missed beyond measure, but never ever forgotten.
