“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”

2 Timothy 4:7

On Thursday, July 3, 2025, Richard Gilbert Bruce, Sr., age 91, completed his earthly journey and was welcomed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His life was marked by steadfast faith, humility, and love for his precious wife of 73 years, Sara Hicks Bruce, along with their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Mr. Bruce was born in Birmingham, Alabama on September 3, 1933, the youngest of four children, to John Bert and Sara Howard Bruce. His family was a close-knit group who were known to get into some hilarious situations – and as he grew older his ability to share stories of the events of his youth became a hallmark of the time spent around his family and friends.

He married his high school sweetheart, Sara Hicks Bruce on May 10, 1952. The couple resided in Washington DC at the time, where he worked for the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover. Soon afterwards, they returned to Birmingham to be closer to family. He began a career working for PPG Industries and their family lived such places as Florence and Sylacauga, Alabama, Albany, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. After many years of working for PPG and other various paint suppliers, he and his son, Richard, Jr., had the opportunity to own and operate Bruce Color Works on Tennessee Street, from which he would retire and remain in Florence for many years. Most recently he and his beloved wife moved to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee to The Summit, an assisted living facility. But no matter where the couple lived throughout their long life of love together, they made many friends with whom they enjoyed traveling and playing games, and they loved each one dearly. They were always faithful in service of the Lord Jesus through a local Baptist church wherever they happened to reside.

Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Guy Bruce and his sister, Mae Will Brock. Along with his sweet wife, he is survived by their children – Carol Humphries (Marshall) of Tupelo, Mississippi, Cheryl Kahler (Bill) and Cindy Edwards (Jonathan), both of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and Richard G. “Richie” Bruce, Jr. (Denise) of Birmingham, Alabama.

He is also survived by ten grandchildren to whom he was known as “Papa”: Anna Robinson (Jon), Steve Graham, Jr. (Abby), Leigh Prince (John), Will Kahler (Tiffany), Drew Kahler, Ben Kahler, Charlie Edwards (Stephanie), Haley Kirkpatrick (Justin), Sally Darnell (Spencer), Richard G. “Trey” Bruce, III (Channing), as well as twenty three great grandchildren with one more soon to be born.

The family wishes to express love and deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff of The Summit, the excellent medical team at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System and Compassus Hospice, all of Lawrenceburg.

Family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 am on Monday, July 7, 2025 with a celebration of Mr. Bruce’s life at 1:00 pm at Greenview Memorial Chapel in Florence, Alabama, with John Brock, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating.
