<p><br></p><p>AGNES “ ZIPPY” VANEK, of Islip, N.Y. formerly of Amityville, died on July 4, 2025 after a valiant battle with cancer.</p><p><br></p><p>She was born March 14, 1956 to Frank and Agnes Vanek, who predeceased her.</p><p><br></p><p>Her parents enjoyed fishing and she became an accomplished angler. In October 1992 she was named the Berkeley Angler of the week and later the Berkeley Angler of the Year.</p><p><br></p><p>On a fishing trip in 1992, she met her “Captain”, Jake Nessel. She became his first mate and life partner.</p><p><br></p><p>She was a member of the last graduating class of Seton Hall H.S. of 1974, and joyfully attended the 50th reunion in 2024.</p><p><br></p><p>She attended the University of Dayton and then began a career in the publishing and digital computing industry in New York and Virginia.</p><p><br></p><p>She was “one of a kind”. She had a zest for life, was passionate, loyal, brave, opinionated and direct. These qualities won her numerous friends and the admiration of her many medical professionals.</p><p><br></p><p>In addition to her beloved Jake, she is survived by her loving sister, Patty ( Tom) Batewell of N.C., devoted brother, Johnny (Barbara) Vanek of E. Islip, N.Y, nieces, Lauren Brown, Kristine( Rob) Ratuis and Aileen (Brian) Graney, nephews, Erik (Kellye )Batewell, Bryan (Stephanie) Batewell and Kevin (Caroline)Vanek of E. Islip, N.Y. and grandnieces and grandnephews. Her brother, Joey, also predeceased her along with her canine kids, her Swiss Mtn.dogs.</p><p><br></p><p>She leaves, to cherish her memory, a host of friends from Amityville, Seton Hall, U.D., her “Texas-Hold-em” friends at Greenview Apts, in Islip, and many fishing friends at Captree and Montauk.</p><p><br></p><p>Visitation at Powell Funeral home Amityville, N.Y on Tuesday, July 8 from 4-7p,m, followed by a funeral mass on Wed. July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Amityville, with burial to follow at St. Charles Cemetery.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to MSK cancer center, the Long Island Jr. Anglers Club, 8 Riunite Rd., Setauket-East Setauket, NY 11733 or to a charity of your choice.</p><p>May her memory be a blessing!</p><p><br></p>March 14, 1956 - July 4, 202503/14/195607/04/2025
