Syneese Desdemona "Desi" Thompson, 69, of Chesterfield, VA, formerly of Fairfax, VA, passed June 26, 2025.

Syneese entered the world on September 6, 1955, a spirited addition to the growing Abernathy clan. Born in Fairfax County, Virginia, she was the second of what would become six children, to the late Alfred and Phereso Abernathy.

Growing up amidst bucolic Fairfax County, Desi found her spiritual home at Greater Little Zion Baptist Church. It was within those welcoming walls, during her baptism and faithful service in various ministries, that her spirit of service truly blossomed, a guiding light that illuminated her entire life. Her curiosity and compassion led her to discover an early passion for the precise and life-saving world of medicine, culminating in her degree in Medical Technology from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV/VCU) in 1977. During those formative years at VCU, she also poured her heart into music, her voice soaring with the gospel choir, "Black Awakening," as they traveled throughout Virginia and surrounding states, their harmonies filling churches and community halls with a message of hope and faith.

After graduating, Desi meticulously crafted a career that echoed her deep commitment to service and excellence. She thrived as a laboratory supervisor, her keen eye ensuring accuracy and precision, all while balancing the immeasurable joys of raising her beloved son, Yurri, with whom she shared a special birthday bond. Driven by a fierce determination to advance her career and provide the very best life for Yurri, Desi embarked on a new academic journey, earning her Master of Business Administration from Marymount University. This opened doors to the dynamic worlds of sales and financial services, and she diligently obtained certifications in specialized areas like medical coding, always seeking to expand her knowledge and skills.

Desi’s faith was the unwavering anchor of her life. She contributed her time and talents in numerous capacities at her church, continuing her ministry of service as a warm and welcoming usher at Antioch Baptist Church. Sharing her financial expertise, she also dedicated herself to working full-time in the church's finance department, ensuring its stability and growth.

On a beautiful spring day, April 10, 1999, Desi's heart found its ultimate match when she married her high school sweetheart, Bruce Thompson, their youthful love rekindled after years apart. Together, they wove a tapestry of faith, love, and family that lasted for 26 years, filled with cherished memories of travels to sun-kissed beaches and vibrant cities, joyful gatherings with loved ones around laughter-filled tables, and evenings spent immersed in the magic of concerts and plays. When her parents' health began to fade, Desi and Bruce selflessly moved to the Richmond area to provide them with tender and devoted care, a profound testament to her unwavering commitment to family. During this chapter, she found a new church home at Second Baptist Church–Chester, embracing her roles as a friendly greeter, an enthusiastic program activity coordinator, and a dedicated part-time financial secretary, until her own health began to decline.

Desi found solace and joy in the simple beauty of gardening, lovingly tending to her flowers and plants in what she called her "happy place," a sanctuary where she could connect with nature and find inner peace. She was always ready to light up the dance floor, a vibrant expression of her zest for life and her unwavering ability to find joy in every moment.

Desi leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Bruce Thompson; her beloved son, Yurri Mial (Rebekah); and her cherished grandson, Uriah. She is also survived by her siblings Deborah Gibbs, Alfred Abernathy, Clinton Abernathy, Gizelle Abernathy, and Angela Abernathy; her brother-in-law Steve Mial (Betty); sisters-in-law Deborah Penny, Dorthy Thompson and Sandara Ellis (Larry); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who will forever remember her as a sweet, loving spirit whose kindness, faith, and warm smile touched countless lives.

Desi's legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 10 am until 11 am with funeral services starting at 11 am at Antioch Baptist Church, 6531 Little Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA, 22039. Rev. Johnnie Fleming, Jr. will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Memorial Park, Annandale, VA.
