John Patrick Mayfield

John Patrick Mayfield (75) of Battle Ground, IN passed peacefully, surrounded by his family on June 26, 2025, at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, following complications brought on by a stroke.

John was born on October 10, 1949, and adopted as an infant by his loving parents, Ambrose and Loretta Mayfield of Lafayette, IN. John spent much of his youth and adolescence developing a love of life, people, and finding mischief wherever possible. An alum of Jefferson High School in Lafayette and Indiana State University, he often spoke of fond memories playing the sousaphone in the marching band, gaining the nickname “TF Flower” from his dormmates, and spending time with great, lifelong friends. Following college graduation, John spent many years living in Glacier, WA – a time in his life that produced endless stories that he loved to share.

John met the love of his life, JoDee (Richardson) Mayfield in 1978 and made the best choice of his life by marrying her in June of 1982. The two moved to Battle Ground, IN, and enjoyed several years traveling and dog-parenting before welcoming their first daughter in 1987 and their second in 1991. John was the best husband and girl-dad that anyone could have asked for, creating countless memories that his loved ones will cherish for years to come.

John enjoyed life thoroughly. He loved traveling, dogs, sitting on the beach, watching almost any sport, the Indianapolis Colts, the Purdue Boilermakers, Indy and Nascar racing, Christmas and playing Santa, woodworking, smoking meats, mowing the lawn, setting off bottle rockets, listening to bluegrass music, watching the same old westerns and war movies over (and over and over) again, and talking to anybody of Jesus. A proud husband, father, and grandfather, he was also a member of Battle Ground Methodist Church and Kairos Prison Ministry.

If his later years, John was beyond thrilled to find his biological family and connect with his brothers Sam, Doug, Bob (1953-2024), and Brian and sister Joan.

John was a big man. He had a big personality, he loved big, he lived his life as big as possible, and he leaves a big hole in the lives of all who loved him.

John is survived by his wife of 43 years, JoDee, his daughters Darcy (Shawn) Dildine and Shelby Pittman, and his four grandchildren: Rebecca, Lydia, Nathanael, and Camden.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ambrose and Lorry Mayfield, biological mother Norma Beckett, and many loving dogs.

Visitation for John will be held at Battle Ground Methodist Church in Battle Ground, IN from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, directly followed by a funeral service starting at 2:00 p.m. Share memories and condolences online at www.hippensteelfuneralservice.com
