Floyd Erkins

With heartfelt sympathy, we announce the earthly transition of Floyd Erkins of Gadsden, who traded time for eternity on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at the age of 80.

“To everything there is a season and time to every purpose under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

A TIME TO BE BORN…
Brother Floyd Erkins was born in Cherokee County on May 21, 1944, to the late Mr. Van Erkins and Mrs. Jewel Cowser Erkins.

A TIME TO PLANT…
At an early age, he united with St. Mary’s United Methodist Church in Centre, AL. Floyd was a 1962 graduate of Hatcher High School, Centre, AL. After school, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a truck driver where he worked for Davis Trucking Company until he moved to Pontiac, Michigan in the early sixties with the love of his life, his wife, Barbara Ann Higgins Erkins. Because he was a dedicated, hardworking man that believed in taking care of his family, Floyd was hired at General Motors after being in Pontiac for only a month. Bobby was later hired at GM and they worked together raising the family they always wanted. Floyd retired from GM in 2007 after having over 40 plus years of service and Bobby retired after 30 years of service, a testament to their faithful, dedication to hard work and independence. After both Floyd and Bobby retired, they moved back to Gadsden and reunited with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Turkeytown. Floyd was an avid sports official/fan that was known for his “gift of gab.” While in Pontiac and Gadsden, Floyd served as an official for football, basketball, baseball, and softball, among other sports. His expertise even extended to Wheelchair basketball, which he officiated in Canada. He loved to bowl and talk “exaggerated banter” while doing so, making it a joyous time for all participating. He faithfully attended Mt. Zion until his health began to fail. He enjoyed fellowshipping with all the members.

A TIME TO LOVE…
He was united in Marriage to Barbara Ann for 60 years and he shared everlasting love with his family and friends.

A TIME TO DIE…
He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Van Erkins; mother, Mrs. Jewel Erkins; brothers, Fred Erkins, Van Erkins Jr., two brothers deceased at birth; sisters, Dorothy Jo (Henry) Wright, Nola C. (George) Aaron, Clemmie Sue (Noah) Dobbins; grandparents, Mr. Jess and Mrs. Lillie Mae Richardson Erkins, Mr. Wesley and Mrs. Mealy Cowser. Floyd was the last of the eight Erkins siblings.

He was called to be with his Lord and Savior on May 15, 2025, in Gadsden, AL at Riverview Regional Medical Center.

A TIME TO CRY…
He leaves to celebrate and cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife, Barbara Ann Erkins, Gadsden, AL; sons, Steven (Darcee) Erkins, Novi, MI, and Cedric (Jennifer) Erkins, Pontiac, MI; grandchildren, Shaquille Erkins, A’niya Erkins of Pontiac, MI, Cedric Erkins Jr., Clarkston, MI, Jaylah Erkins, Lake Orion, MI, Nicole Joseph, Detroit, MI, Shanique Matthews and Jaylen Joseph of Pontiac, MI; great-granddaughter, Quori Erkins-Parker, Lake Orion, MI; brothers-in-law, Henry (Ever) Higgins, Gadsden, AL, James (Clarissa) Higgins, Huntsville, AL; sisters-in-law, Annie Ruth Hughes, Detroit, MI, Jacqueline Fisher Higgins, Gadsden, AL; uncle, Jessie Erkins, Eufaula, AL; special nieces, Henri Jean "Red" Bonner, Darease Wright, Tameka Dobbins, Tiffany "Shorty" Higgins, and Carita Wyatt; special nephews, Marlon Wright, and Earmon Aaron; special friends, Geraldine Lewis, Menion Stimage, J.L.
