<p>Our beloved son, Nick DeGroot age 25, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep due to cardiomegaly on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at his home. Born on Wednesday, December 22, 1999, the loving son of Timothy DeGroot and Bonnie Kaufman and cherished brother of Morgan DeGroot. Nick was a 2018 graduate of Richmond Burton High School and worked as an electrician at Electrical Options where he was known for his skill and dedication. He was always eager to help with any electrical project and was a wonderful friend in times of need.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>In high school, Nick enjoyed cross-country and track, especially the 800 run, and continued his passion for running at the University of Memphis and Coastal Carolina University as well as numerous marathons, the Ironman, and 3 100-mile races.&nbsp;</p><p>He had a dream of buying property where he could live and build cabins to rent out as Airbnb’s. Nick enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and was an excellent contractor, fixing all the homes he purchased. Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Nick had already begun building a real estate empire owning three homes by the age of 25.</p><p>His legacy will forever be remembered through the love he shared unreservedly with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them and if you knew him, you knew it. His loss will be profoundly felt. Nick DeGroot, a man of great kindness, generosity, and bravery, will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Nick, you will be dearly missed but never forgotten. He left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength. He was not only a beloved family member but also a dear friend to many around him.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>Survived by his father, Timothy (Madeline) DeGroot; mother, Bonnie (Timothy) Kaufman; sister, Morgan DeGroot; maternal grandmother, Jenny Clark; aunts, Judith (Lloyd) Arrow; Ann (Tom) Meyers, Marian (the late Daniel DeGroot); cousins, John and Zach Arrow, Bailey and Brock Meyers; Danielle DeGroot; many friends.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>Preceded by his paternal grandparents, John (Mary Ellen) DeGroot; grandmother, Joan DeGroot.</p><p><br></p><p>*In memory of Nick, the family requests everyone to wear casual attire; Carhartt preferred.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service, at Thompson Spring Grove Funeral Home, 8103 Wilmot Road, Spring Grove, IL.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>Visitation will continue Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. with closing prayers at 9:45 a.m. at Thompson Spring Grove Funeral Home followed by burial at Richmond Cemetery, Richmond, IL.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>Memorials to the family would be greatly appreciated.</p><p><br></p><p></p><p>For additional information, please call the funeral home at 815-675-0550.</p><p><br></p>
