Karen E. Barone (LaBouef), 63 of Rome was freed from her battle with Alzheimer’s disease, passing away peacefully on Tuesday April 8th, 2025.

A well-known social butterfly, Karen never met a person that she couldn’t chat with. She was a beloved Coach, Girl Scout Leader and Church School Teacher. She could usually be spotted on a ball field or with a car full of softball players taking them to various tournaments and adventures. Karen loved finding fun in anything she did and enjoyed visits to the Turning Stone, traveling and the beach. Karen and Dave enjoyed their breakfast and dinner dates, weekend get aways and spending time on their front porch. Her home was always open to visitors and she made sure everyone was well fed-even if it meant cooler sandwiches for a road trip. Most recently she made sure everyone stopped at her bowl of chocolate with an enthusiastic “MMHMMM”!

Karen is survived by her husband of 37 years David, her favorite daughter Lacey Magnanti (Stephen), her favorite daughter Lindsay Regan (Richard). Her greatest joy in life were her two grandchildren Stephen and Carly. Karen is also survived by her siblings, Leslie Schuneman (James), Lisa De LaMarre, Cynthia Soares, Teresa Hollenbaugh (Wayne), Alicia Renee Koeppel (Daniel), Sandra Theriault (Dennis), sisters-in law Laurie Fusco and Cherryl LaBouef. Karen was a proud Aunt/Great Aunt to several nieces and nephews that referred to her lovingly as “KK,” “Karen Karats” and “Nanny Karen.” She leaves behind two of her longest friends Chris McCorduck and Karen Tomasi, both of whom were her partners in crime throughout the years.

Karen was predeceased by her parents Paula and Theodore LaBouef, her mother and father in-law, Gloria and Albert Barone, brother Theodore (TJ) LaBouef Jr., and brother-in law Joseph Fusco Jr.

Karen spent her 35-year career working in the laboratories of Rome Health and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. She was a passionate Histotechnican that enjoyed teaching any student that came through her lab. Karen was also very excited to participate in Alzheimer’s research at the Yale School of Public Health. As part of her final wishes Karen made the noble decision to participate in the Anatomical Gift Program at SUNY Upstate Medical School to contribute to the field of research and student education.

The family would like to thank Karen’s favorite caregivers Cheyenne and Lori from One Caring Place, Dr. Islam Hassan, and the Memory Care Unit at Betsy Ross. In addition, the overwhelming support of friends and family throughout Karen’s illness will not be forgotten.

In true Karen fashion, snacks and a celebration of life will be held on Thursday April 17th from 5pm-7pm at the Franklin Hotel in Rome. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N.
