<p>Clarence Howard Goins was born in St. Charles, Virginia, on March 7, 1926, in Lee County, Virginia, and passed away at Lee Health and Rehab in Pennington Gap, Virginia, on March 6, 2025. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Dovie, for seventy years. Clarence was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, son, and sibling. He was a constant and stable figure in his family’s lives. Clarence was drafted into the army while he was in high school. In 2001, he received his honorary high school diploma from the Virginia Board of Education. He served for two years and was stationed in Italy during WWII. When the war ended, he finished serving as a Sergeant at Fort Dix in New Jersey. Clarence worked in the coal mines and then at Lee Ford, Inc. and Piggly Wiggly, which became Food City, from which he retired. He served on the Pennington Gap Volunteer Fire Department for 70 years. He was a founding Pennington Gap Rescue Squad member and was granted a lifetime membership. He was also a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Clarence was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the lake. He loved baseball and played third base, the “hot corner,” as he called it. Clarence was of the Christian faith and was a member of the First Christian Church of Pennington Gap. </p><p><br></p><p>Preceding him in death are his wife, Dovie Virginia (Gilbert) Goins; son, William Howard Goins; Father, Sam Henry Goins; mother Flossie (Poteet) Goins; step-mother Pearl (Lawson) Goins; sister, Ella Mae Goins, Geneva (Goins) Allen, Reta Fern (Goins) Potter, Halene (Goins) King, Alice Marie Goins, Cathy (Goins) Fields, Helen (Lawson) Warren; brothers, John Henry Goins (infant), Jackie Wayne Goins, Danny Gray Goins; and grandson, James Clarence Goins II. </p><p><br></p><p>Those left to cherish his memory are his son, James Clarence Goins and wife Naomi of Mooresburg, TN; granddaughters Crystal Turner and husband Bobby of Locust Grove, VA, Mandy Robbins and husband Ray of Pennington Gap, VA, Angie Carpenter and husband Joshua of Mooresburg, Tennessee, Joy Swann and husband Daniel of Morristown, Tennessee; grandson Joshua Howard Goins of Pennington Gap, VA; his great-grandchildren, Haley Sarah Elizabeth Goins, Molly Elise Turner, Cohen James Turner and wife Maggie, Rhett Hayden Robbins, and Clay Brennan Robbins, Drake Goins, Creed Carpenter, Cade Carpenter, Daniel Swann, Eli Swann, and Kendall Wallen; great-great-granddaughter, Calliope Salem Turner; sisters, Shirley (Goins) Orr, Brenda (Goins) Owensby and husband Nick; brother, Charles Wesley Goins; daughters-in-law Brenda Gibson Goins and Wilma Gibson Goins Smith; and several nieces and nephews. </p><p><br></p><p>Clarence had wonderful caregivers who became family: Roma Ramey, Tami Burgan, Elizabeth Cress, and Rachel Mullins. He received excellent care during his stay at Lee Health and Rehab. </p><p><br></p><p>The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 11th, from 4:00-6:00 pm, with a private military service to follow. </p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the Pennington Gap Volunteer Fire Department in his memory. </p><p><br></p><p>Clarence Howard Goins and his family are in the care of Pennington Gap Funeral Home.</p>
