John Joseph Murphy, Jr. November 2, 1933– January 8, 2025

John J. Murphy Jr. was born in Manhattan, NY in 1933, the son of John J Murph, Sr. of Bangor Erris, Mayo, Ireland and Catherine Murphy of Cork City, Ire. He grew up in Washington Heights where he was taught the value of family, friendship, community and faith in God and where he learned to discover, love and improve the city in which he lived: values he would later pass on to his children and students. He attended elementary school at the Church of the Incarnation Parish, high school at LaSalle Academy and University at Manhattan College, where he graduated with a degree in English and Philosophy. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956 and was stationed in Korea where he served as a Radio Operator. He worked as a clerk for Metropolitan Life insurance and settled on a career as a high school teacher first at Rice High School, then as a New York City Public Junior High School Teacher for 30 years.

In 1952 he met Mary Beatrice Murphy of Brooklyn at an Irish dance at the Manhattan Center. He took her hand to dance that night and did not let go for the next 72 years. They were married in 1960 and lived briefly in the Bronx before moving to Sunset Park, Brooklyn in the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) in 1964 where for the next 60 years they made a home for themselves, their 11 children and almost any other person who showed up at their door. John J. Murphy saw everyone he met, first and foremost, as a child of God. Besides being a dedicated and loving husband, father, son and brother, he was a caring and beloved neighbor to everyone on his block, a teacher of Christian Doctrine, a lector and Catechism teacher at OLPH where he was a devoted parishioner and daily communicant.

He is survived by his wife Mary (nee Murphy) and eleven children, John W., Joseph, Maureen (Keith), Paul (Christina), Peter (Julie), James, Patrick, Daniel (Molida), Kathleen, Elizabeth and Margaret (Jerome), their former wives Irene Gryziec and Laura Chenicek, eleven grandchildren, countless friends, neighbors and strangers he touched with his genuine concern and attention.
