It is with profound sadness that our family shares the passing of Conrad (Con) Aben. He passed peacefully on Saturday, November 9, 2024, with family at his side. A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, he leaves a legacy of love, faith, and commitment: a life well-lived. While he was ready to go home to the Lord, we who are left behind mourn a heavy loss.

Con approached his life with a deep sense of responsibility and care – for those he loved, for his community, in his work and in everything he undertook.

A man of action and used to looking after others, it was difficult for him when his health declined, and he was unable to contribute in the ways he was accustomed. Being on the receiving end of care felt unnatural. But it was a privilege to care for him, to give back just a little of what he gave over the course of his life. His love, example and wisdom remained gifts to those in his life right up to the end; his quiet strength was mighty indeed. Always concerned for his family, we told him at the end that we would (eventually) be ok – because he, with his love and encouragement, had made certain we would be. We can still hear him telling us “Life is good” as he did so often.

Con and his brother, Hank, grew up farming alongside their parents, who had immigrated from Holland. Though he enjoyed the farm and the close-knit Dutch community of Coalhurst, he felt the pull of the city and moved to Calgary where he completed a business diploma at Mount Royal College. It wasn’t long before he met Theresa (Terry) and they married shortly thereafter. Together, they welcomed and raised three children, their house full of music, discussion, learning, and fortified by a deep dedication to family and community. The dinner table was often shared with visitors needing a hand or friends away from their own families.

Con enjoyed dancing and singing, often joking that his enthusiasm compensated for any lack of skill. He loved hiking, golf, and spending time in the mountains. Family vacations in Radium became a tradition early on and we will always think of him and feel his presence when we spend time there. He loved to laugh, and he put others at ease with his quick smile and sense of humour. Con gained the trust and respect of those with differing opinions, not by debate, but with kindness and tolerance.

He was a founding member of St. Michael's parish, where he actively participated in various ministries, including RCIA, Baptism, Drop-in Centre, and Parish Council. Following a career in finance and management within Calgary’s energy industry, Con retired and transitioned his part-time volunteer work into a nearly full-time commitment. For over 25 years, he dedicated time weekly at the Foothills Hospital, providing support to the sick and dying.

We will remember his warmth, strength, unconditional love, and the deep sense of safety afforded those closest to him. We will miss the daily phone chats, visits and the heart-to-heart conversations that became commonplace in the latest years. There will forever be a gap in our family and gatherings, but we will strive to emulate the generosity, guidance, and encouragement he shared so easily.

Con is lovingly remembered and missed by his son Tom Aben (Darmody Mumford), daughter Mary Aben (Richard Anton), grandson Jesse Aben (Nicole Aben), great-grandchildren Oliver, Natalie, and Amelia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Terry, daughter Pat, son-in-law Peter, brother Hank, and special friend in recent years, Ann.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85 Street SW) on Friday, November 29, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., in the Day Chapel, with reception to follow on-site.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Con’s memory may be made directly to Operation Smile or a charity of your choice. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Con’s family through www.evanjstrong.com.
