A longtime resident of the Virgin Islands, Jay spent over 40 years surrounded by the ocean he loved. His connection to the sea began early in life. Born and reared in Islamorada in the Florida Keys, Jay received his first boat at the age of seven, beginning a lifelong journey of exploration on the water.

Jay’s love for nature extended beyond the ocean, as he developed a profound interest in tropical trees and plants. His study of botany deepened his appreciation for the natural world. Jay felt a strong connection to the earth always finding peace in nature.

A effortless sailor and skilled powerboat captain, Jay built a career on the water, taking him on remarkable voyages from Florida to the Caribbean, Central America, the Bahamas, and as far as the South Pacific. His confidence at the helm put everyone at ease, and he was known for sharing his love of the ocean with others. Jay was also a sport fisherman, foil boarder, freediver, and dive master. He often said, "What would I do, retire and get a boat?"—his work was his life’s joy.

Beyond his time on the water, Jay was an avid reader, animal lover, birdwatcher, F1 fan, motorcycle enthusiast, and world traveler. Known for his kindness and warm smile, Jay always offered a helping hand. His calming presence and generous spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Anna; his two children, Ross Hegenwald and Dawn Adair of Melbourne, Florida; his sister, Kim Adair of Vero Beach; and many friends and extended family.

A celebration of Jay’s life will be announced at a later date.
