<p>Richard “Dick” August Adank, 91, of Winona died September 29, 2024, at Sugar Loaf Senior Living.</p><p><br></p><p>Dick was born in Fountain City, Wisconsin on May 30, 1933, the son of August and Merle (Rothering) Adank.&nbsp;&nbsp;He grew up in Spring Valley, Wisconsin and attended Spring Valley High School. He graduated in 1951, entered the United States Army and served two years active duty in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was honorably discharged in 1955.</p><p><br></p><p>Dick returned to Winona and attended Winona State College. He graduated with a BS in elementary education and MS in administration in 1967.</p><p><br></p><p>On August 3, 1960, he married Ceil Lelwica in Winona. They had five children and were later divorced and he was formerly married to Catherine Pellowski.</p><p><br></p><p>Dick was a teacher for Madison Elementary School and went on to become a principal for ISD 861. He was the principal for Central Elementary, Minnesota City Elementary, Stockton Elementary, Ridgeway Elementary, Rollingstone Elementary and spent most of his career at Goodview Elementary, which he helped to open in 1971. Dick retired from Goodview Elementary in 1993.</p><p><br></p><p>Before his retirement, Dick obtained his pilot’s license. He enjoyed flying his Aeronca Champ airplane. He had a great interest in planes and looked forward to his annual trip to Airventure Oshkosh with his sons and grandsons. Dick enjoyed most of his free time at his cabin in northern Wisconsin that he built with the help of his brothers. With each grandchild’s birth he planted a tree in their honor and hung a nameplate on its branch that line the property of his cabin. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and proud Patriot.</p><p><br></p><p>Dick was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona and a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, serving as the Commander in 1987, 2002 and 2003.</p><p><br></p><p>Dick is survived by his children: Paul (Jacqueline) Adank of Downers Grove, IL, Katherine (Dan Cada) Adank of Winona, John (Kari) Adank of Onalaska, WI, Julie (Jamie) Klein of St. Marys, GA, Peggy (Paul) Killian of Winona; eight grandchildren: Matthew Beyerstedt, Whitney (Chris) Berglund, Austin (Maddie) Adank, Samuel Adank, Ava and Andrew Killian, Tyler Klein, Addison Adank Cada; two great grandchildren: Kenzie Berglund and a great grandson expected soon; brothers Donald (Lois) Adank of Elmwood, WI, Robert (Diane) Oebser of Plainview, MN; many nieces and nephews.</p><p><br></p><p>He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, August Adank Jr., Clyde Adank, Dallas Adank, LaVerne “Mickey” Adank; three sisters, Judy Oebser, Lorraine Olson, Carol Lueras; sisters-in-law, Donna Adank, Eloise Adank; brothers-in-law, Gerald Olson, Edward Lueras; his loyal springer spaniels: Tippy, Mercedes, Champ, Dexter.</p><p><br></p><p>Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona, with Father Russ Scepaniak officiating. Military honors will be held at the church following the Mass. A gathering will be at the American Legion Post 9, Winona following the military honors. Interment will be at Waumandee Public Cemetery, Waumandee, WI.</p><p><br></p><p>Visitation for Dick will be 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home and beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Visitation Commons at St. Mary’s Church, Winona.</p><p><br></p><p>Honorary casket bearers will be Dick’s grandchildren.</p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Winona Area Humane Society, 1112 Broadway Street East, Winona, MN or the charity of your choice.</p><p><br></p><p>Services entrusted to Fawcett Junker Funeral Home &amp; Crematory, Winona, MN.
