John Misko, Jr.

John Misko, Jr., passed away peacefully on Saturday August 31, 2024 at UCONN Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. John came into this world on July 18th, 1939 in New York, NY to first generation immigrants from the Ukraine, Anna (Holota) Misko and John Misko. His parents’ names are proudly carved into the marble at the base of Lady Liberty on Ellis Island. John grew up in New Britain and the Misko house always had the BEST pierogies, sauerkraut, and kielbasa in the neighborhood.

John was a proud Marine Corp Veteran and honored them wholeheartedly with his lifetime Marine buddies, William Moore of Plainville/ Florida and Anthony Manfredonia of Long Island. He was an extremely hard-working devoted husband and father to his high school sweetheart Dianne (Carlson) Misko and their four wonderful children. Working as a prized machinist and Shop Steward at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for over thirty eight years, he still found the time and energy to coach youth football, play competitive baseball and softball throughout the northeast, perform high level umpiring in fast and slow pitch men’s softball across the U.S., compete in bowling and golf leagues, cheer on the Red Sox as their biggest fan, play competitive cribbage at the American Legion, travel the world with his wife and friends, dote on his grandchildren, and ever so faithfully chase that elusive “next big trout” up and down the Farmington River for hours and hours on end. As a fisherman, John was legendary! The story goes… “John Misko once caught every species of trout in one day. The final one was not only a Tiger Trout but a record breaker as it was extraordinary in size like no other on the Farmington River has ever been seen before.”

Our Papa John will be deeply missed by so many. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Dianne (Carlson) Misko of Plainville CT, son John Misko III, daughter Heidi (Misko) Grisé and Dr. David Grisé, daughter Karen Misko, and son Eric Misko and Nicole Misko. John has four grandchildren, Mika, Stella, Luka, and Kai Misko that brought great joy to his life. As a grandfather, “Papa” truly hit his stride, making every milestone for the grandchildren so much more important. Whether it was bringing clowns, with his brother Chet to birthday parties, throwing coins in the swimming pool, sneaking sweets, attending all of the school functions, taking kids school shopping and trips to Friendly’s, Papa made every small moment a little more special.

John is predeceased by his sister Jayne (Misko) Scanlan and husband Thomas Scanlan, his brother Chester Misko and wife Gretchen Misko, his brother William Jerry Misko and his sister-in-law Cathy Labutis, leaving his sister-in-law Barbara Misko and brother-in-law Joe Labutis, both of Florida. John had a large family that included many in-laws, cousins, god-children, nieces, and nephews with whom he enjoyed spending time and in turn was always praised for his loyal, loving, and charming hospitality as the door was always open at the Misko house for Sunday dinners and holidays. Christmas Eve celebrations at his home were epic and seemed to go on for days.

In lieu of flowers, John and the family request that your donations be made to the “Tunnel to Towers Foundation” for veterans and their families at http://www.t2t.org or to the Lymphoma Research Foundation at http://www.lymphoma.org

Family and friends may gather in celebration of John’s life on Friday, from 5-7 p.m. at Plainville Funeral Home, 81 Broad St, Plainville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., meeting directly at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad St, Plainville. Military honors will be accorded following the Mass, with burial to be held privately at a later date. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlainvilleFuneralHome.com
