<p>S. Bruce McCoy, 81, of Washington, WV, died Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at his residence. He was born in Parkersburg, the son of the late Josephine M. McCoy Coe.</p><p><br></p><p>Throughout his life, Bruce was always a people person and on the go. He began working as a Parkersburg south-side paperboy. His college summers were spent working as a counselor at South Charleston Union Carbide camps. He was a teacher for Wood County BOE for 49 years, 22 years at Edison Jr. High and 16 years at Franklin Jr. High. After retiring from full time teaching, he continued to substitute teach for an additional 11 years, until 2016. He worked numerous jobs during these summers and spent 25 years working delivery and special events for Pepsi. Bruce graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1961, received his B.S. in 1966 from West Virginia Tech (where he was known as Megaphone), and his Master’s Degree from Salem University. He was active in Boy Scouts, attaining Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow. Bruce was a member of the Ohio/West Virginia Officials Association for over five decades. He umpired baseball, officiated football games 1967-1998 and refereed basketball games for over 5 decades. Bruce was a long time fundraiser for Wood County Recreation. He attended Christ Mission Baptist Church. Bruce was a leader of the Lubeck Lucky Clovers 4-H Club for over three decades, WV 4-H All Star, member of the Wood County Historical &amp; Preservation Society, Wood County Farm Bureau, and West Augustus Geological Society.</p><p><br></p><p>An avid traveler, Bruce visited all 50 states in the USA and visited many countries, on 4 continents. Bruce loved family vacations to beaches, natural wonders, historical sites and amusement parks. Bruce’s adventures varied from riding camels in the Jordanian desert, hot air ballooning over Cappadocia, Turkey, dipping his hand in the Arctic Ocean, visiting his ancestral home of Scotland, swimming with whale sharks in the Philippines, walking in the footsteps of Jesus in Israel, gondola rides in the canals of Venice, cruising the Mediterranean, Panama Canal and Caribbean, or white water rafting in WY and WV. Wherever Bruce roamed, he seemed to run into an acquaintance. Easily identified in WV attire, Bruce connected with people all over the world.</p><p><br></p><p>He was preceded in death by Joesphine McCoy Coe, grandmother Margaret Gates McCoy; in laws John A. Bailey, Mildred (Fleak) Bailey, Jimmy D. Eddy, Carl Barr and niece Kimberlie Eddy Kasler.</p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years Barbara L. (Bailey) McCoy; two sons Matthew L. McCoy (Diana) of Washington, PA and Noah J. McCoy (Rochelle); and grandson Luke Bailey McCoy of Hawthorne, CA. He is also survived by in-laws Joni Barr, Janet Eddy, Jim and Rose Shutts and several nieces, nephews and cousins.</p><p><br></p><p>Special thanks to Janet Eddy, Jim and Rose Shutts, Tena Martin, Sonya Parr, Bob and Penny Eddy, Jamie Anderson,&nbsp; Cheryl Smith, Dan Clevenger, Achele Earley, Mary Buck, Dr. Jennifer Leavitt, In Motion Therapy, Emily and Cassie, MOV Parkinson’s Support Group, Care Team WVU/Camden Clark, Encompass, CenterWell, House Calls Hospice and the many friends and neighbors who reached out to him.</p><p><br></p><p>To all the many former students, athletes, co-workers and friends, who took time to thank Bruce and share stories, know that you added special joy to his life.</p><p><br></p><p>Services will be Wednesday 1:00 PM at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Mark Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 PM.</p><p><br></p><p>Memorial donations may honor Bruce's memory to Wood County 4-H Camp Trustees, Missions at Christ Mission Baptist Church, or Wood County Historical &amp; Preservation Society.</p><p></p>
