Judy Carol (Smart) Altpeter

November 23, 1949– August 15, 2024

Judy Carol Altpeter, 74, of Yuma, AZ, passed away peacefully at home on August 15, 2024.
Born and raised in Yuma, Judy was the youngest daughter of Arthur and Goldmer Smart. She
spent the majority of her life in Yuma, with brief periods in El Centro, CA, and Phoenix, AZ.

Judy was known for her tomboy spirit, spending as much time as she could outdoors, helping on
the farm and, when she was old enough, convincing her father to take her hunting. She loved to
hunt and fish and was thrilled to hear about the experiences of others when she couldn't join in.
She proudly became the first girl at Kofa High School to take welding, agriculture, and shop
classes and was also the first girl to join the FFA there.

Judy was a fighter; overcoming breast cancer, heart failure, and several major surgeries in her
latter years. She found joy in staying connected with family and friends, always ready to lend a
hand. Despite her tough exterior and pulling no punches, she had a big heart and was ready to
help anyone in need, often times dropping what she was doing to go pull her brother or friends
out of the desert.

During melon season, Judy drove tractors for Pasquinelli, where she enjoyed sharing stories of
the camaraderie and fun she had with her coworkers. Her lively personality and great sense of
humor made her a friend to many and a stranger to none.

Although she was not blessed with children of her own, Judy took pleasure in helping raise her
nieces and nephews, saying it was good enough for her. She took immense pride celebrating
their achievements and successes.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Goldmer Smart, and her husband, Paul
Altpeter. She is survived by her brother Larry Smart (Peggy), her sister Sherry Gilbert (Bill), as
well as her nieces, nephews, several cousins, and many friends.

Judy, you are in our hearts always and will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held on August 26th at Yuma Mortuary from 11:00 AM
to 1:00 PM
