Roger E. Bertrand

Roger Edwin Bertrand, age 81, passed away July 4th, 2024, in Council Bluffs, Iowa surrounded by family.

Roger was born on July 7, 1942, to Victor and Marie Bertrand in Minneapolis, MN. He was united in marriage to his loving wife, JoAnn (Eckes), on August 24, 1963, and from this union four children were born: Kari (Mark) Lehman of St Joseph, MO, Emily (Pat) Binger of Wichita, Jake Bertrand of Council Bluffs and Claire (Joe) Barker of Overland Park, KS. He was the proud grandfather to 10 grandkids: Brad, Chase and Cole Lehman, Sarah and Mike Bertrand, Madison and Joe Binger and Jack, Victor and Daniel Barker.

Roger was a man of integrity who believed in hard work and honoring commitments. He could not be easily swayed, never desiring the center of attention. He was a man of few words, unless he needed to stand up for you, put you in your place or share his pride of his family. He had a strong work ethic, instilled at the young age of eight, when he began working at a pickle factory owned by his grandfather. Professionally, he spent 35 years in the judicial system. He began as a Court Reporter in Cleveland, OH. He then moved to Harlan, IA, where he and JoAnn started their family and formed lifelong friendships, including Judge C. who became his dear friend and mentor. He moved the family near Treynor, IA next and designed his role in Council Bluffs as Court Administrator, where he managed the judicial branch of the 4th District of Iowa. His dedication to justice was honorable.

Rog had a passion for fixing old cars, discussing politics, betting on the dogs and telling stories of mischief. He loved watching his grandkids grow up, spending time with dear friends & family and cracking quirky jokes. His ability to recall memories dating back to childhood was remarkable and if you were lucky you heard meticulously detailed recollections of his younger years.

His heart was dedicated to his wife, JoAnn, and since her passing he has longed to join her. His life begins anew as he is reunited with her to begin their next journey.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by wife, JoAnn; sister, Virginia Ohman, and brother, Henry Bertrand.

At his request, the family will be celebrating Roger’s life at a private inurnment. They thank you in advance for your kind thoughts and prayers. Roger really appreciated those of you who visited and checked in on him over the years. The family will direct memorial contributions (or go buy yourself a shot of whiskey and cheers him).
