Gresham
September 17, 1946 | July 3, 2024

Bishop Janice B. Gresham transitioned to her heavenly home on July 3, 2024. Born on September 17, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Willard W. and Grace Hackett, she was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. Janice is preceded in death by her siblings Willard W. Hackett, Rolla Curtis Hackett, and Betty Jean Lewis.

She spent her formative years in Buffalo, New York. Her spiritual journey began on March 23, 1955, at her grandmother's home in Columbus, Ohio, where she was first filled with the Holy Ghost. Two years later, she answered her call to ministry and preached her trial sermon on September 25, 1960, at Emmanuel Temple in Buffalo, NY, under the late Bishop William Crosby. As she evangelized throughout Upstate New York, Janice honed her extraordinary gift for ministry. She later moved to Columbus, Ohio, and for eight years she served as the Assistant Pastor of the New Church of Christ Jesus under the late W.W. Hackett. In June 1970, she was ordained as an elder in the Holy Convocation of the Greater Emmanuel Fellowship and began preaching in revivals across the United States. Janice's educational journey included studies at Aenon Bible College and Ohio State School of Theology.

Her business acumen led to a successful career in management at the Gold Circle Corporation, where she established stores nationwide, and later in nursing management at Saint Anthony's Hospital until her retirement. A mighty warrior of God, Janice was unwavering in her commitment to ministry as well as to preach. During her evangelistic travels, she met the love of her life, Arthur B. Gresham, and they were married on June 25, 1977. Janice was a devoted mother to her children Ayanna Garrett, Evangelist Nicole Valdez, and Dr. Sharmane Delgado-Payne. After serving as an Assistant Pastor, she joined Greater Life Evangelistic Temple under the late Bishop Q.L. Wilson. In March 1995, she founded the Power of God Deliverance Center, "Where only the power of God delivers his people, and Jesus is the center of our joy." Under her leadership, many souls were saved, healed, and delivered. Before her canonization to the Bishopric as Greater Emmanuel's first female Bishop at the 40th convocation in July 2000, she reflected on her ministry, saying, "40 means testing, and I've stood the test of time."

Janice leaves a legacy of faith, love, and dedication to God's work. To know her is to love her. She was a woman who devoted her life to God and was a devoted wife, mother, confidant, and friend. She was a woman of peace who loved people, loved to laugh, spent time with family, and encouraged people worldwide. Her ultimate desire was to see people saved and develop a committed relationship with Jesus Christ. In addition to being a dynamic speaker, she was a down-to-earth person. Janice often loved to laugh and make jokes. She was an enthusiastic musician who directed choirs and played the saxophone; her love for music was eternal. On August 4, 2019, she retired from pastoring.

Janice is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Elder Arthur Gresham; daughters Ayanna (Jheron) Garrett, Nicole (Jesse) Valdez, and Sharmane Delgado-Payne; five grandchildren - Hannah, Jheron Jr, Sydney, Jordan, and Giselle; a host of family and friends. She loved loved her nieces and nephews - Grace Hackett, Lydia Hackett, Jeffery Hackett, Sam Hackett, Kenny Lewis, Susan Lewis, Michael Hackett, Venique Herndon, and Zina Lee, and a host of great-nieces and nephews.
