G. Brian Paxton, 75, of Mount Vernon, passed away on June 16th, 2024.

Brian was born on February 26, 1949, to Betty and Gene Paxton in Seattle. After graduating from Seattle Prep in 1967, he went on to study education at Central Washington University. Prior to beginning his teaching career, Brian served in the Peace Corps in the Marshall Islands. He taught middle school students in Kennewick, Washington for several years before earning a law degree from the University of Idaho. Brian practiced family law in Mount Vernon, Washington for 23 years and retired as the Skagit County Superior Court Commissioner in 2017.

Brian was an active member of the Skagit County Theater Arts Guild, where he both acted in, and stage managed, a number of productions. He helped establish the YMCA Oasis Teen Shelter in Mount Vernon, Washington. Brian also contributed to a number of local organizations, including Volunteer Lawyers and the Underground Writing program.

Brian met Peggy while in law school in Moscow, Idaho in 1978. They bonded immediately and spent the next 46 years together. Brian always said his goal was to make Peggy laugh each day, and according to Peggy, he did a pretty darn good job. They had two sons, Alec and Matt, and Brian was immensely proud of the men they became. He welcomed his daughter-in-law, Alysia, into the family with welcome arms. The birth of his granddaughters, Abigail and Mackenzie Paxton, gave him such joy. Brian also felt a deep connection with his sisters, Jan and Wendy Paxton.

Brian judged his life by the community he built, the lives he touched, and the joy he created for others. And by this measure, he lived an exemplary one.

He is survived by his wife, children, daughter-in-law, granddaughters, sisters, niece Jen Parsons (Joe Cotton), sister-in-law Coni Turner (Dave), brother-in-law Scott Glass (Samantha), nephews Cade Glass and Levi Campbell. A celebration of Brian's life will be held at Hillcrest Lodge in Mount Vernon on July 30th at 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Bradford House (skagitadultdayprogram.org).

Brian was one of the funniest men I have ever known. He was truly a breath of fresh air in the courthouse. I will never forget him!

Mr. Paxton helped us in court when we needed someone to believe us. He trusted me and helped protect my children. We are forever grateful to him.
