Our loving mother and grandmother, May Spence, passed on June 20, 2024 at the age of 89 in Virginia Beach. She lived in the city for a few years after traveling from Florida, New York, and her home of Jamaica. She leaves behind her beloved children Ann Marie Stewart and Heather Carey, grandsons Raymond Carey and Michael Lewis, great-grand-daughter Reina Carey, beloved siblings Ralph Spence, Shirley Spence, Catherine Spence, and many beloved family members and friends.

May was born in Ashton, Jamaica on October 1st, 1934 to Ida J. Ricketts and Rudolph Spence. She worked as a postmaster in the Leamington post office. She left Jamaica in the 1960’s to live in Westberry, New York, where she raised her children and put herself through college, majoring in accounting. After retiring, she moved to Florida, and then moved to Virginia Beach in 2022 to be closer to her family.

May was a resilient woman, charming and articulate in everything she did. She was an avid gardener, adding some of the vegetables to make as much Jamaican cuisine as she could make, even when separated from her home ingredients. Her favorite pastime was crossword puzzles, often with PBS stories and news playing in the background.

As per her wishes, May is to be cremated, and the ashes collected. She’ll be greatly missed as the matriarch of the family. Our hearts are heavy with grief, but she will always be in our memory.
