Karen Wong

Karen Wong passed away unexpectedly on May 27th.

We, like many of you, have been in shock that this vibrant young person is no longer with us. We miss her very much.

Karen was an extraordinary person and touched all our lives in so many profoundly meaningful ways. She was loved by everyone. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the UCSF Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (11Long) for over 30 years and had only recently retired. During her time there she was loved by all the staff, her patients and their families. She loved being a nurse, and loved working with her patients and colleagues, whom she considered family. Thanksgiving was always a special time on 11/12 Long, where Karen continued to bring the turkey even after she retired.

Her passion for travel and crazy adventures took her to the top of Everest Base Camp, Mount Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu and to the bottom of the earth from the Big Pit in Wales to Lake Titicaca. She had the grit and perseverance to climb mountains and hike across Spain, Australia, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Japan, China, Nepal, Africa, Central America, Europe, the UK and the USA. She flew in balloons, jumped out of planes, dune buggied through deserts, surfed sand and water. Karen had friends in every continent on the planet, but she also loved San Francisco and made sure to share that with anyone who would listen. She made extraordinary relationships during those travels from the cleaning staff and waiters to other hikers or travelers. Her most beloved connections were in Swaziland where she left a piece of her heart with the people she met and cared for with Scott Stewart and David.

Wherever Karen went, her family and friends were never far from her thoughts, and always picked up gifts for those who were not traveling. She never took travel for granted and would make her companions stop and acknowledge the wonders of the world, as well as the privilege of being able to do so. She was indispensable at meal times, finding the most delicious items on the menu from her extensive knowledge from food channels, magazines and documentaries. Nobody ever went hungry in Karen’s company. Her Christmas Eve dinners were legend, and were always inspired by her travels that year. Last year’s theme was Japan, and featured sashimi, sushi and ramen. Everyone was eagerly awaiting this year’s menu after Karen’s trips to Greece and Scandinavia.

Karen leaves behind her brilliant sister Sandy Wong, wonderful brother in law, Bob Clark, her amazing sister, Tina Wong, her extraordinary nieces Sarah Shinners and husband Dan Shelberg, Megan Shinners and her husband Mark Gonzales, and very gifted Grand Nephew Rory. She was incredibly proud of her wonderful nieces who were both inspired by her, and are now practicing RNs.

Karen's funeral will be on June 10th at 10:30 am at Duggan's Serra Mortuary in Daly City.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Karen’s memory to one of the following organizations:

As many of you know, since 2009 Karen with her friends Scott and David have provided direct food and medical support for 12 families she came to know and love during her many visits to Swaziland, Southern Africa. If you would like to help continue Karen’s support for these families, please consider contributing through Scott Stewart’s Venmo or Zelle accounts: ubescott@gmail.com

PLEASE SEE THE TRIBUTE WALL PHOTO FOR THE SWAZILAND DONATION QR CODE.

The California Native Plant Society (see link below).

For those unable to attend the funeral, it will be live streamed starting at 10AM @ https://www.viewlogies.net/duggans-serra/FaQdCFIpv?pin=999969
