Portia Felicia Lang - Coble

Portia Lang - Coble, affectionately called “Popo”, was born on March 6, 1961, at Harlem Hospital Center in New York, New York, to Deloris Lang and Edward Henry. Although her birth mother was Deloris, Portia and her sisters were reared by Girtdell Hightower, who assumed the role of mother for Deloris' children. Popo attended P.S. 4 elementary school, Intermediate School 22, and Lockport Senior High School, where she graduated and began a career as a Teacher Coordinator at the Abyssinian Baptist Church.

Popo later relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, where she found her passion in floral designing. Joining Kuhn Flowers Florist, she created many beautiful arrangements for loved ones and general plant lovers. She moved back to New York City when she was introduced to her late husband, Barkim. They married on her birthday, March 6 in 2006, and moved to Wilson, North Carolina. As Popo did not have children of her own, she married into a family that gave her both children and grandchildren.

Portia (Popo) became a member of the Patterson Chapel Church with Rev. Julius Hunter where she served on the usher board. Here is where she joined the Eastern Star Wilders Chapter #34, and earned her stars. Residing in North Carolina, she always found time once a month to visit New York City to spend time with her nephew, Timothy, and his wife Leah with whom she took on the role of mom and grandmother's role to Tim, Jr., to Troi, and to Tracen (Fat Fat) all after her sister passed. Popo had so much extended family from N.Y.C. handed down to her and her siblings by Girtdell Hightower, who raised her and her sisters.

Popo was a great cook and everyone knew her fried chicken and fried fish were untouchable. She was the true “stat” of designing flowers and cooking great food. She was the epitome of “what didn't break you. Would make you stronger.” She had a kind heart and always wanted to see everyone happy.

Popo was called to eternal rest on June 29, 2021. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Popo is preceded in death by her parents: Deloris Lang and Edward H.
