<p>Kenneth Lee Lawing of Conover, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Saturday, the 25th of March, 2023, at the age of 90 in the presence of his loving family. His quick wit, optimism and big heart will be missed by the many who had the privilege to know him.</p><p><br></p><p>Ken was born March 6, 1933, in Catawba County and graduated in 1951 from Newton-Conover High School where he played basketball and baseball. He then went on to Lenoir Rhyne College followed by three years at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Pharmacy School (Rho Chi Scholar), graduating with a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1959. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Army from 1953 -1955.</p><p><br></p><p>For over 40 years, Ken was the owner of Bowman Drug Company in Conover, founded by his father-in-law Carl Bowman in 1941. He was devoted to and loved by his community and treasured the relationships he established at Bowman Drug.</p><p><br></p><p>Beginning as a teenager, Ken was an avid and skilled golfer who enjoyed many rounds at Catawba Country Club and on golf trips with his friends, playing well into his eighties. He was a life-long supporter of UNC-CH and was passionate about UNC basketball and football, attending many games but frequently having to leave to take a breather when a game was too close for comfort. He loved sharing his passion for UNC with his son, daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons, who all graduated from UNC, and with his youngest grandson who is currently attending.</p><p><br></p><p>In addition to his parents, Oscar William Lawing, Sr., and Edna Norwood Lawing,&nbsp;he was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sharon Lawing; brothers,&nbsp;Oscar Lawing, and Lindsey Lawing; and sisters, Mary Alice Lackey, Taltha Cline, Joyce Seagle, and Patricia Rider.</p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 68 years, Patricia Lawing; son, Douglas Lawing (Houston TX); daughter, Linda Boone and husband Chris (Charlotte); and three grandchildren: Wood Boone (Madison WI), John Boone (Charlotte) and Ben Boone (Chapel Hill), for whom, as their Poppy, he served as a mentor and fun friend. He is also survived by his sister, Anita Bollinger and husband Rowe (Conover) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.</p><p><br></p><p>A service to celebrate Ken's life will be held on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Newton. Rev. Josh Sherfey will officiate. A reception will follow the service in the Family Life Center. Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private committal service.</p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Kenneth L. Lawing’s honor be made to First United Methodist Church Renovation Fund, P.O.
