Fred Welshans, Sr.

Fred Welshans, Sr., of Colliers, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at Wheeling Hospital on January 25th, 2022. He was surrounded by all of his surviving children praying with him. He was born in Colliers, on June 9th, 1929, where he lived most of his life. He was a son of the late Charles O. and Elsie Brown Welshans. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Charles, Bill, Jack, and Chester and his sisters; Betty, Catherine, Wanda, Ida Mae and Virginia. At the age of twelve he began work on the Pennsylvania Railroad and as a laborer at Wells Farm. At a very early age he found great joy and accomplishment in work. Like many of his generation, he lied about his age in order to join the United States Army. He served during the Occupation and was stationed in Okinawa and China where he experienced the horror and lingering suffering of war. He worked at many “indoor” jobs and later worked for Ohio Valley Dairy (United Dairy) for over 40 years. During this time, he also worked as a grave digger. Over the years, he dug graves at every cemetery in Brooke County and four cemeteries in Washington County Pennsylvania. For sixty-eight years he served as the sexton and vice-president of Oak Grove Cemetery. He taught his son that no matter the person, every burial was to be done with dignity and respect. He taught all his children the value of work and responsibility. He told us no one chose for him; he chose to be Catholic. He was a faithful member of Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. It’s been said that a great gift a father can give his children is to love their mother. That he did. He and his wife, Nina Lorenzo Welshans, were married on December 31st, 1949. She preceded him in death on January 4th, 1999. He is also preceded in death by his in-laws whom he loved as his own, Ignacio and Julia Suarez Lorenzo. For many years, he and “Pop” were inseparable, working side by side. He suffered the loss of two children; Stevie Lorenzo Welshans and Julia L. Hubbard and two grandsons; D.J. and Joseph. He leaves behind two sisters, Judith Nice and Patricia McGaughey. Fred leaves four children, Fred Welshans, Jr., Chris E. Welshans, Scot D. Welshans, Sr. and his wife Anna Marie and Tina R. Bedner and her husband Eugene. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Edward, Nicole, Scot (April), Danielle (Chris), Alexandra, and Gabrielle; his great grandson, Owen, and his great granddaughter, the youngest of the family, Olivia Nina, along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Friday, January 28th, 2022 from 4:00Pm until 7:00PM with Vigil Service at 7:00PM at the Mullenbach Funeral Home at 669 Main Street Follansbee, WV. A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 29th at 10:00 am at Saint Anthony Roman Catholic Church at 1017 Jefferson St. Follansbee, WV 26037 with Rev. Fr. Jude Perera, TOR, as celebrant. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, with his family, in the Regina Coeli section of Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the best way to honor our Dad is to embrace all that is good and true and do an act of kindness for someone.
