Marvin August MeyerMarvin A. Meyer 94, of Sumner, died, Sunday, December 19, 2021, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 23, 2021, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Tracy Hinkel officiating. Burial will follow at the Church Cemetery, rural Sumner with military rites provided by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Visitation will precede services at the Church on Thursday, starting at 9:00 AM. Memorials may be made to the family for later charitable designation. Marvin August, son of Henry and Marie (Bodermann) Meyer was born June 25, 1927, in Sumner. He was baptized on July 17, 1927, and confirmed on April 6, 1941, both at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Marv attended Country School rural Sumner, prior to graduating from Sumner High School in 1944. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 until being honorably discharged in 1946. On June 26, 1949, he was united in marriage with Idena Heller at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. To this union two children were born, Diane and Dan. Marv and his brother, Wilbert, purchased the Hardware Store in Sumner in 1955, which became Meyer Hardware. The two worked together for ten years, prior to Marv becoming sole owner in 1965, and continued to own and operate until his retirement in 1992. Following his retirement, he owned and operated Meyer Locksmith until 2003. Marv was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council and other Church Boards, the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years, serving as Fire Chief for six years, Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner, Board of Directors of the Iowa Hardware Retailers Association, where he served a term as President, Commercial Club for thirty three years, and the Board for Sumner Housing Corp. He taught Hunter’s Safety Classes in the 1960’s and would later teach them with his son-in-law, Wendell. Marv was honored as Grand Marshal for Sumner Days in 1999 and took the Honor Flight in 2009. He was a determined individual, surviving a heart attack, open heart surgery, and overcoming prostate cancer, twice. Marv enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting, golfing and fishing, and was able to fix anything. Marv is survived by his children, Diane (Wendell) Bohle of Sumner; Dan (Jane) Meyer of Marshalltown; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Rath of Grimes, Nan (Matt) Lohmann of Adel, Ben (Valerie) Bohle of Mantorville, Minnesota, Andrew (Brianna) Meyer of Urbandale, Brianna (Hunter Barnard) Meyer of Marshalltown; seven great-grandchildren, Trevor, Josh, and Katie Rath, Lizzy and Zach Lohmann, and Brady and Shane Bohle; and great-great-granddaughter, Olivia Idena Rath. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Idena in 2014; brothers, Wilbert “Bill” (Vonnie) and Orville (Vi) Meyer; and sister, LaVera (LaVerne) Niewoehner.
