Gwendolyn Elaine Cantrell, age 86 of Columbus, Kansas, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Joplin, Missouri. Gwen was born August 2, 1934 to the late Earnest Virgil and Juanita Gertrude (Bash) Cossairt in Baxter Springs, KS. She graduated from Columbus High School and was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. On January 6, 1957 she married Charles Martin Cantrell in Rural Columbus, KS. After raising a family, Gwen worked as a Cook and Custodian for the Columbus School System at Greenlawn School. She retired after 20 years of service. Gwen was also a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, and the WMU. She was a talented crafter, enjoying sewing, needle work, bead work, and cake decorating. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening. Gwen was an avid reader and always loved to learn new things. Surviving Gwen are her husband Charlie, three sons Charles R. Cantrell (wife Beth) of St Louis, MO, Kevin L Cantrell of Joplin, MO, and Russell D Cantrell (wife Melody) of Kechi, KS; two daughters Barbara A Cantrell of Columbus, and Katheryn K Durand (husband Dan) of Thompson, CT; three brothers Lee Cossairt of Columbus, Ray Cossairt of Dixon, IL, and Jack Cossairt of Columbus; two sisters Marilyn Morris of Columbus, and Sally Atwood of Duvall, WA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Arrangements are being handled through Derfelt Funeral Home in Columbus. The service will be held at the funeral home in the chapel, 10:00 AM Saturday, December 26, 2020. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the family, in care of the funeral home.
