Visitation: 3:00-7:00pm, Monday, November 23, followed by a prayer service at 7:00pm at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, 1111 South Main Street. The family kindly requests that masks be worn at all services. Hazel Irene Schaunaman was born to Herman and Sophia (Luikens) Wendt on the family farm southwest of Aberdeen, SD on October 24, 1929. She attended Riverside (Country) School and then Aberdeen Central High School, graduating in 1947. She was united in marriage to Donald Schaunaman on February 17, 1950. They made their first home east of Westport before moving back to her family’s farm in 1953. While raising their four children, Hazel had seasonal and part-time employment. She began employment with the federal government in 1969 and ended her career with the Internal Revenue Service in 1993. Hazel was a member of the Minerva Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for 72 years. She was active in her local chapter as well as on the state level. She served as Worthy Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota in 1995 and held many other state positions throughout the years. She was a 4-H leader in Brown County for 13 years while her children were in 4-H. She also enjoyed helping her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with their 4-H projects. Many of them have fond memories of learning to bake and sew with her. She enjoyed attending all of their 4-H activities at both the county and state level. Hazel was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in United Methodist Women and instrumental in starting the History Committee for the Church. She also enjoyed using her sewing skills to make donations for mission trips. In her retirement, Hazel enjoyed spending time with the ladies of the morning exercise class at the Washington Street Gym. She and Don rarely missed an athletic event that their children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren participated in—whether it was in Aberdeen or out of town. Family was an important part of Hazel’s life. She enjoyed family gatherings, whether it was a few close family members or large extended family get-togethers. Her family is grateful that she required family photos be taken before any Christmas dinners could be eaten. She enjoyed genealogy and put together volumes of family history. Grateful for having shared Hazel’s life is her husband, Don of Aberdeen; her four children: Mark (Lana) Schaunaman of Ashley, ND, Kristie (Gregg) Erickson of Aberdeen, Craig (Carolyn) Schaunaman of Aberdeen, and Kirk (Kim) Schaunaman of Aberdeen; 11 grandchildren: Chad (Mysty) Schaunaman, Staci (John) Sundberg, Scot (Crystal) Schaunaman, Becky Erickson, Andrew (Shari) Erickson, Thomas (Courtney) Erickson, Emma and Samuel Schaunaman, Kayla, Kelcy, and Karly Schaunaman; 14 great-grandchildren: Adrianne and Dylan Schaunaman, Clay, Ian, Tate, Zane, and Kade Sundberg, Cora, Cutler, and Calli Schaunaman, Claire, Blake, and Charli Erickson, and Lucy Erickson. She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Atlas, Robert, and Dwight (in infancy), and one sister, Helen Hansen. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be given to Eastern Star Charities, First United Methodist Church, or Brown County 4-H.
