Joseph J. Zid, 89, passed unexpectedly and peacefully at home in Hot Springs Village, AR formerly of Brookfield, IL. Joe was born March 28, 1931 to Joseph and Harriet (nee. Bojanowski) Zid in Chicago, IL and raised in Berwyn, IL.
He spent his summers blissfully on Lake Catherine in Antioch, IL. Joe graduated from St. Odilo Grade School in Berwyn and St. Mel High School in Chicago. Soon after Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force where he progressed to the rank of Staff Sargent. While stationed at Travis AFB in California, he met the love of his life Ethel Mae (Tooter) Kerley. The two married on April 28, 1956 and settled in Chicago. Joe was employed by IBM for over 36 years as a Customer Service Engineer.
He was the winner of the inaugural distinguished IBM Customer Service Award and multiple awards following. Joe and Tooter raised their children Joseph W. “Joey” and Elizabeth in Brookfield, IL. Joe gave of his time and talents in support of his kids by serving as equipment manager of the Chicago CYO Bands. He was a proud member of the CYO Club of Champions. After retirement from IBM Joe enjoyed traveling the United States with Tooter and attending band concerts. They moved to Hot Springs Village, AR in 1996 to enjoy the natural beauty of the area especially trees. He was a parishioner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Hot Springs Village, AR.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Tooter, and his parents. He is survived by his children Joseph W (Leanne) and Elizabeth Zid and grand dog, Nellie; his siblings Jim (Joyce) Zid, John (Carol) Zid, and Mary Ann (John) Gisburne; many nieces and nephews; and friends that are family.
Memorials are requested to the American Wind Band (PO Box 605, Downers Grove, IL 60515); the Hot Springs Community Band (P.O. Box 8667 Hot Springs, AR 71910-8667); Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church of Hot Springs Village; or the veterans’ charity of your choice. Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 295 Balearic Road, Hot Springs Village, AR 71909 there will be a brief visitation, in accordance with COVID rules @ 10:30 followed by Mass of Resurrection at 11:30 AM. In accordance with COVID rules, seating in every other pew, only sitting with immediate family.
