Darrel C. Brady

Darrel C. Brady, 95, a lifelong resident of the Forest Grove community, died Tuesday, October 20, 2020. Private Cremation Rites were held at the Hoyt Crematory. DARREL CLETUS BRADY was born October 30, 1924 in Forest Grove, Oregon, to Ira Perl Brady and Lela Caroline (Smalberger) Brady. He was raised and received his education in the Kansas City district of Forest Grove, having been a graduate of the Forest Grove High School Class of 1941. He was a Veteran of World War II, enlisting in January 1944. He served with the 306th Army Air Force until receiving his honorable discharge in November 1945 at the rank of Corporal. He received the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal World War II. Darrel married Ruth Helen Gabbert on December 21, 1946 in the Kansas City district of Forest Grove. Following their marriage, they spent one year in Corbett Oregon and then made their home in the Forest Grove community for the rest of their lives. Darrel was preceded in death by his dear wife Ruth in 2015, after celebrating over sixty-eight years of marriage together. Darrel completed courses at the Northwestern School Of Commerce in Portland. Over the years he worked for Charlie Sellers farm, R. Hoe & Co., the West Union Store, Sellers Hardware, Prudential Insurance, Ewing-Richardson Motors, McCready Lumber and Boise-Cascade. Darrel was the Business Manager for the Forest Grove School District for thirty years until his retirement in 1989. He was a longtime and active member of the Forest Grove United Church of Christ, and a charter member, and past president, of the Tualatin Valley Gem Club. He was a prominent member of the Forest Grove Lions Club for 70 years; serving in every office at least once; most often and most famously as the “Tail Twister”. He was a proud recipient of the Lion’s prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship. Following his retirement, Darrel volunteered more than 4,000 hours over 16 years as a patient transportation van driver for Tuality Community Hospital. He was also a volunteer van driver for the Forest Grove United Church of Christ. Among his special interests, he enjoyed rockhounding, hunting, fishing and woodcutting. He loved to explore the outdoors of the northwest looking for rocks and spending time on the family timber property. He was a people person; a kind, caring man who made friends wherever he went. He was distinguished by his work ethic and his humor; he loved to MC events where he shared his humor and his bad jokes and puns. You knew you were a favorite if you were lucky enough to be joked about by Darrel at a public event or in a card or letter. Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruth and his sister, Una Sindt. Survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Brock and Kyongsook, of Kensington, Maryland and Kerry and Michelle Brady, of Beaverton, Oregon and his sister, Elaine Wiltse of Portland, Oregon. Also surviving are his three grandchildren, JT Leis and his partner, Courtney Russell, of Spokane Washington; Molly Brady and her fiancé, Joseph Mars, of Beaverton, Oregon; and Shannon Brady of Riverside, California; and his three great-grandchildren, Silas Brady Leis, Ruthie Joon Brady and Teagan Michelle Leis, and numerous much-loved nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Oregon Lions Sight and Heading Foundation, in his memory.
