Father Jerry Quintal

Born: 4/24/1939 in Sioux City, Iowa, to Burnice and Martin Quintal. Welcomed into Heaven on the Feast of St. Francis 10/04/2020. Surviving Siblings are Tom (Julia) Quintal, Sharon (Steve) Caputo and Dorothy Jacobs Fr. Jerry’s family moved out west from Iowa when he was young and made their first home in Tigard, OR. From there they moved to Lincoln City for most of his grade school and high school education. As a senior he entered Mt. Angel Seminary and then would transfer to St. Thomas Seminary in Seattle to finish his studies for the priesthood. His assignments in the priesthood included being a chaplain an Marylhurst College and then an associate at St. James (McMinnville), Holy Family (Portland), St. Francis (Portland), St. Peter the Fisherman (Archcape), St. Edwards (Keizer), St. Philips (Dallas) and finally St. Josephs (Cloverdale). During his time in Portland he also served as Vocation Director for the Archdiocese for 13 years. A Few Grace Notes: • Fr. Jerry loved the liturgy and showed this in the reverence and care he brought to each celebration. • He was one of the first in the Archdiocese to implement the Revised Rite of the Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and opened many to the waters of this font of grace. • He was a peace maker in places where division had gripped a community; he brought healing and unity. • He loved nature and especially his pet companions. • He felt so inspired to be living in a time when we have a Pope Francis to teach us true pastoral care for our world and the humble joy of the Gospel. • Fr. Jerry would be the last to take the spotlight, but for those of us who experienced his pastoral care … He was and remains … a Good Shepherd. May he guide us always. We are so grateful to have been touched by him. Thank you for your kind prayers and thoughts. If you wish to donate in his honor, please give to those who lost their homes in the Oregon wildfires recently. https://www.unitedwaymwv.org/?fbclid=IwAR0kPQ9mYAu6PlERsuRb616ItfRdU48WaEnqdmZ4Z8RN5TBFuVl6a41FrrU To access the above link, copy and paste into your browser.
