Mr. Willard Punt, age 83, of Sheldon, formerly of Orange City, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2020, at the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care. There will be a private family funeral service on Monday, March 23, at 2:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. David Van Kley will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Willard Eugene “Whiz” was born on May 1, 1936, on a farm near Maurice, the son of Arie and Alyda (Vander Brake) Punt. He was raised in Carmel and graduated from the Sioux Center High School. In 1986, he received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwestern College in Orange City. On December 29, 1959, he married Jacquelyn Arlis “Jackie” Vander Zwaag in Orange City. They made their home in many towns in the Northwest Iowa area. He worked most of his life as a soil conservation technician and a farmer. Whiz and Jackie also managed the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon for a few years. Mr. Punt was an active member of the Carmel Reformed, Newkirk Reformed, and First Reformed church in Orange City, serving on the consistory and teaching Sunday School. Most recently, he attended Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon. He was also a member of the Gideons International. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, RVing, family vacations, playing cards, and participating in bible studies. He was also an avid Northwestern College sports fan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters and their husbands, Tami and Ray Burnett, of Lakewood, Colorado; Karmin and David Boote, of Marion, Iowa; and Karla and Craig Schuning, of Olathe, Kansas; nine grandchildren, Kara Lopez; Tarin Mawhir; Keifer Mawhir; Timorae Mawhir, and her fiancé, Henry Waite; Ray Burnett, and his wife, Celeste; Megyn Burnett; Bre Boote; Emma Boote, and her fiancé, Joey Ness; and Thane Schuning, and his wife, Nicole; two great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn Schuning and Taylor Ness; three sisters, Arlene Boscaljon; Hendrene, and her husband, Ken Kats; and Margaret Kooistra; a brother, Roger, and his wife Judy Punt; a brother-in-law, Peter Leo Vander Zwaag; and two sisters-in-law, Lois, and her husband, Paul De Jong and Sherry Vander Zwaag. In addition to his parents and Jackie’s parents, Jake and Arta Vander Zwaag, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lee Punt; a sister and her husband, Adelaide and Arnie De Jong; three brothers-in-law, Willard Boscaljon, Ron Kooistra, and Ken Vander Zwaag; and a sister-in-law, Madeline Vander Zwaag.
