Barbara Joanne Kashner Beyer, 85, of Berwick, died Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born August 1, 1934 in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Sophia (Pastoe) Kashner. A graduate of Bloomsburg High School, Class of 1952, Mrs. Beyer went on to earn her degree from Drexel University (formerly Drexel Institute of Technology) in 1956. She was employed at Burroughs Business Machines from 1956 to 1959. On February 21, 1959, she married her husband of 47 years, Budd L. Beyer. Joanne was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Berwick. She volunteered in many community activities and memberships, including serving on the Board of Directors at the Berwick Hospital and the Berwick YMCA, where she was also a trustee; Meals on Wheels, VIP (formerly the Berwick Hospital Auxiliary), the Twentieth Century Delphian Club, and the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation. In addition, she assisted in fund raising for the YMCA, the McBride Public Library, and the United Way. A member of Beta Sigma Phi, her sorority sisters were dear to her heart. Joanne enjoyed having dinner with her friends, as well as playing bridge, dominoes, and the piano. In her younger years, she crafted needlepoint as a pastime. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family. Preceding her in death was her husband, Budd L. Beyer, who died in July 2006. Surviving are her five children: Scott Beyer and his wife Polly, Craig Beyer and his wife Senta, Mark Beyer and his wife Debra, Karen Seiple and her husband Terry, and Lynn Johnston and her husband William; fourteen grandchildren; her sister, Susan Shotwell; and her brother, Fred Kashner and his wife, Michelle. Joanne loved her community of family and friends. In light of the current coronavirus pandemic, her family has decided to postpone visitation and funeral services so as not to risk exposing her loved ones to the virus. A date for Joanne’s memorial service will be announced in the future. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Berwick YMCA, 231 West 3rd Street, Berwick, PA 18603, or the First United Methodist Church at the above address. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., Berwick.
